About the Luis Caballero Award

The Luis Caballero Award is Colombia’s most renowned artistic recognition; it is given to mid-career artists over 35 years of age who are Colombian citizens or residents. This public call is held every two years. It was created by the Instituto Distrital de Cultura y Turismo (IDCT) in 1996 to recognize and promote Bogota’s artists by providing them support and financing for their artistic production.

With the creation of the Instituto Distrital de las Artes (IDARTES) in 2010, the award changed hands but not objectives. However, a significant adjustment was made following the proposal that a direct relationship (intervention and installation) be established between the art and the exhibition spaces–places that were chosen because they have an important symbolic significance, be it architectural, political, or social–. This relationship between the artwork, the space, and the context allows the space to continually transform depending on the art. It also offers the opportunity for the artwork to freely unfold in a latent relationship with the context, since each art intervention site has its own circulation dynamics that the artists take into account when creating proposals. In addition, the most important thing is that the audience gradually and individually creates an artistic panorama of the city based on their visits to the exhibitions and various spaces.
